No Te Va Gustar: How to sustain independent growth through digital media planning

News

When you think of an independent band in tiny Uruguay, you don’t necessarily think about Grammy, MTV Awards, and MTV Europe Awards nominations, ongoing tours throughout the US, Mexico, Panama and Peru, and over 1.6 million fans on Facebook, but that’s all true when it comes to InPulseDigital’s client, No Te Va Gustar. As one of Latin rock’s most thriving bands, they have achieved a level of success comparable to top bands under major labels, with a completely different strategy based on a partnership deal with PopArt Records, giving them a lot more control, but lacking the big marketing and communication machinery of a major.

This unorthodox path to mainstream success is, in part, the work of manager Nicolás Fervenza, who had a conversation with InPulse about the importance of maximizing resources. “Facebook allows us to communicate efficiently while controlling our investement.. All our communication first goes through Facebook” he explained. Unlike other big acts, both, the manager and the band themselve, work side by side with the digital agency’s community managers, regularly checking what’s posted, what fans are saying and how they react to content. Even though traditional media is still important in most markets, social media is essential for a band that consistently conquers new markets every year without the expertise and support of a major label. “The ability to precisely measure and interpret how audiences from cultures very different to ours react, sometimes before we even have a show there, is vital to creating a targeted strategy that’s specific for each market”, said the manager, who also highlighted the importance of mouth-to-mouth in their strategy, and how social media is nowadays a source for news outlets, who often relay information straight from social networks, instead of the band having to use PR resources to get the news out there. Of course community management is only part of the recipe. The band has had great success with Facebook Apps that convey their creative and approachable personality. Their latest one, created by the digital agency to support the band’s PR efforts for the Mexican tour “El Calor del Pleno Invierno”, included the new video for “A Las 9” and a creative contest for fans to win backstage passes. How successful? We’re talking over 10 thousand new fans from Mexico and a 40% increase in video views for the single.
